Experience "Prom" Again

Not sure about y'all, but I might have been up to some no good back when that famous Spring dance rolled around my high school...

Luckily, Macy's is providing shoppers with an opportunity to experience "Prom" again - and feel good about it! The first 200 guests at their Atlanta Lenox Square Mall location will have the opportunity to meet stars Kylie Bunbery and De’Vaughn Nixon from Disney's new movie, "Prom." While you're at it, you'll have the opportunity the change someone's life by donating your gently worn prom of formal dress at the event. Your dress will go in the to the local donate-my-dress-dot-org chapter, Becca’s Closet.

Lela for Less

I'm not sure about you, but I am so much more inclined to buy a product or support a brand if I believe in the people behind it. It's the same reason I pretty much only buy my outdoor gear from Patagonia. It's the same reason I visit the same boutique over and over again because I not only want to clothe myself in things that (I think!) look good, but I want to support the people/person offering me the selection. Similarly, this notion is why I love Texas-born designer Lela Rose. She has appeared to be extremely down to earth from day one...even designing a line of shoes for Payless, making her genius accessible to just about anyone.

At her Spring 2011 RTW show last fall, her models partners their breath-taking ensembles with styles from the now-available Payless line.

So sorry for the tardiness of my posts recently. I am going to try and get back on the blog train, though I will admit I may not be able to post as often as I had been before moving to Asheville.

Updates? Well, Clark and I are getting settled in quite nicely in Asheville. I've been doing most (well pretty much all) my shopping at Constance, the best consignment shop ever in South Asheville. Can't wait to document some of my recent finds which include a long, formal Nicole Miller black gown for $55, black Theory velvet trousers for $14.50 and a slew of majorly discounted Michael Stars tees!

Weekends are definitely spend outside these days. Here are a couple iPhone shots from our hike of Max Patch and part of the Appalachian Trail outside of Hot Springs, NC.

Apologies, My Loves!

Hello everyone! I just want to thank you so much for bearing with me while I go through a period of transition in my life. About a month ago, I was asked to join my old employer, Moondance Adventures, for a second stint as the Admissions Director. Clark and I weighed the pros and cons and decided to pack our things and head back to Asheville, the city where we met and fell in love.

Moondance is an outdoor adventure program for middle and high school students, offering leadership-building trips around the country (and a few scattered throughout the globe), using the wilderness as a classroom and a platform for students to grow and learn with one another in the purest of settings. I participated in two Moondance trips when I was in high school back in '01 and '02, traveling to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado for my first trip and exploring the Pacific Northwest (and summiting Mt. Rainier all the while) on my second trip. As soon as I wrapped up my first Moondance adventure, I couldn't wait to turn 21 to become a leader and to share such life-changing experiences with the amazing kids that seem to sign up year after year for our trips.

After I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill, I nailed down my 80 hour Wilderness First Responder course and bagged my first magical summer as a Moondance instructor. So many of my students remain close friends of mine as we laughed and cried through the most fun (but sometimes most strenuous!) of days hiking, rafting, climbing and sea kayaking. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of leading 4 Moondance trips and making 43 new best friends (that's 40 students and 3 different co-leaders). I'm proud and excited to be back in the office as well as touring high schools, sharing my Moondance story to anyone who will listen!

With that said, Clark and I have been shuffling back and forth from Atlanta...moving boxes, looking for apartments, maybe drinking a little champagne to celebrate my new salary...but alas, as you can see, I've been neglecting the blog.

I promise you, dear readers, I'll be back in the saddle as soon as possible...though regular efforts and reports will likely start after the holidays. Until then, keep up with my quick 100andSouth snippets a la Twitter by following me at @100andSouth. I thank you so much for your patience, but ultimately, I thank you so dearly for your support. You're the reason why I do what I do when it comes to the blog, just like the smiles on these kids faces are the reason I knew I had to get back to Moondance.

I've had the great fortune of meeting some pretty amazing people in Atlanta. One such multi-talented person I met recently is Ashley Schoenith, the social media coordinator for the non-profit organization Cure Childhood Cancer. When I first met her, I was so impressed with her poise and dedication to her job and her cause.

But people have a way of surprising you further, and I learned Ashley is not only a faithful fitness bootcamper (6AM workouts 5 days a week? New Atlanta Boutique Alert: VETTED

A new boutique has opened its doors in Atlanta, taking the place of Lexie and Jane on East Paces Ferry. VETTED features styles from Geren Ford, Thread Social and Leigh and Luca, replacing the tons and tons of tee shirts and jeans previously occupying the space.

Check out their super clean interior. I love the contrast of the darker, fall-hued clothing with the white walls. I can only imagine how bright this space will be come spring.

The exterior of the store got a makeover too...a yellow door helps to welcome new customers while the dark paint keeps things mysterious.
Here's hoping their website also will receive a makeover here soon with more details about what designers they are carrying!

Macy's Heart of Haiti: Shopping with a Purpose

Wouldn't it be easier to swipe your credit card if you knew part of the cost of your purchase was going to a good cause? I know I'd be much more likely to buy something if I knew my funds were doing some good elsewhere (rather than just looking good on my feet, wrists, torso, etc.)

That's why I am a huge fan of the Heart of Haiti home decor line, now available at Macy's. The line is part of a "Trade Not Aid" initiative that Brandaid and Fairwinds Trading presented to Macy's in an effort to help build Haiti's economy after the devastating earthquake that shook the nation on January 12, 2010. Handcrafted by several hundred artisans in Haiti, the items are as colorful and as inspiring as the folks who make them.

Naming Names: Stella & Dot

Are you familiar with the names Stella & Dot? I had heard a little about their jewelry line about a year ago, but I never gave it much thought. It seemed to me like a cheesy, tupperware party type of gimmick. I wasn't sure what type of "style" could be found in something that seemed, on the surface, generic and...old-ladyish.

This was all until my friend Margaret became a Stella & Dot stylist. Marg is one of the cutest, most put together girls I know, so I had to come see the goods for myself when she and my friend Bethany hosted a trunk show earlier this week.

I was amazed by all the goodies she had for us to play with and try on! These pieces ranged from the uber-preppy pearls and diamonds (not necessarily my thing) to the gloriously art deco and vintage (now we're talking).

Happy Birthday to Me!

In honor of my 25th birthday, I wanted to treat myself to the perfect sweater. I'd been eying this Fair Isle-style cardigan by Kensie on a certain website that had it priced at $78. "Totally 100andSouth and such a steal," I thought. I was prepared to buy it, no questions asked.

Though I can easily get inundated with emails from discount shopping sites like Rue La La, Gilt and HauteLook and sometimes delete them to a) tame the shopping beast in me and b) clear out my inbox, I happened to open a day old email from Beyond the Rack - another (and sometimes more unpredictable, less edited) discount shopping website.

My comfy, cozy, ideal fall sweater. Perfect for snuggling up and drinking hot chocolate/reading non-fiction/painting my toe nails beside my non-existant fireplace. I can smell the wood burning already!

A New Fan of Ann

I have to admit, I've never been a big fan of Ann Taylor...perhaps its because I've always equated the store with starchy button downs, boring pencil skirts and plain ol' slingback pumps. Their look, in my mind, seemed to be that of a girl trying too hard to look too old.

But lately, Ann Taylor and her cool, hip lil' sidekick LOFT have been blowing my mind. I can now call myself a "Fan of Ann."

Primary Patterns

While shopping in my old college stomping grounds in Chapel Hill this past weekend, I came across a refreshing new consignment shop, Limelight, on Franklin Street (where Modern Times used to be). Admittedly, I was a little sad to see Modern Times go. My sister and I purchased multiple sentimental items here when we were younger...most importantly, my sissy's Sue Wong white gown that she wore for her high school graduation (not to mention countless shimmery Michael Stars tops, which were all the raise back in the early 2000s!

But I was ecstatic to see some top notch brands in the form of gently used clothing at this new spot. There was an aqua Gucci clutch, a favorite of my sister-in-law's. I found a perfectly preserved Chloe Paddington bag for an unbelievable price too! (Not 100andSouth but low enough that I felt okay asking my parents for it for my birthday - fingers crossed!)

I wanted to scoop up several items in the store but only left with one...a perfectly patterned geometric shift dress by Banana Republic. Long sleeved but lightweight, this frock is fitting for fall temps!

I've paired it with my Tulle sergeant trench, a vintage red belt and some eggplant Marc by Marc Jacobs flats for the office. Hi-ho, it's off to work I go!

Out on the Town: Sage Clothing Runway Show

I am so looking forward to this Thursday night! One of Atlanta's best and most affordably-priced boutiques, Sage Clothing, is having a runway show at their Buckhead location. Starting at 6PM, this event is sure to feature some of my favorite 100 and South designers like MM Couture, Blank Denim and Tulle. Can't wait to come back and let you all know about my experience! Stay tuned!

Steppin' Out

Every once in a while, I have to step out of my 100andSouth "comfort zone" and totally immerse myself in the world of lavish, luxurious fashion. For me, it's like getting a massage or a facial - I can't do it all the time, but when I can, it's heavenly and it's WORTH IT!

Lucky for me, I have an adorable, kind, sweet and amazingly-chic sister-in-law, Ashley, who owns an equally incredible boutique Vermillion at North Hills in Raleigh, NC.

Last Thursday, Ashley and her Vermillion team showcased their latest fall fashions for customers. Transforming the floor of the store into a runway, gorgeous models presented even more gorgeous ensembles for customers, like me, to drool over...

Since we're all fans of fashion here - no matter the price tag - I wanted to feature some of my favorite pieces from Ashley's presentation. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what you enjoyed!

One of my favorite pieces of the day was this long sleeved white Derek Lam dress paired with a Gabrielle Frantzen necklace and Anya Hindmarch coat. Wouldn't it be the most gorgeous wedding dress for a fall or winter low-key wedding?:

Megan Park's designs continue to wow me - she can combine glitz and glamour with the bohemian nod that I desire. And how versatile are those Loeffler Randall pumps?!:

In my opinion, this Matthew Williamson coat was the show-stopper, paired with over-the-knee Loeffler Randall boots. Everyone gasped when this look came around the corner!:

Of course, following the fashion show, my sister and I had to play a little dress up. I fell in love with a white Tucker blouse (yes, same company from my previous post!) and these silk, army green Loeffler Randall pants! Doesn't Linds look like a movie star in that AKA top with 3.1 Phillip Lim leather shorts and Loeffler Randall booties?

The family fashions continue - check out my sister-in-law Fleming in her Lela Rose tunic and Lela Rose necklace. The necklace was right up my Mom's alley too.

Vermillion has become an extremely important piece of my family history...I even found my wedding dress there during a Lela Rose trunk show. Thank you Ashley for always including me and bringing amazing fashion to North Carolina!

Run, Don't Walk! Tucker for Target

Target's collaboration with designers perks my interest with each new addition. Remember those first Luella Bartley designs with jade green accents and bright red cherry prints? Or how about the recent designs of Zac Posen...even celebs and socialites on New York Social Diary were proudly sporting his designs for Target at the finest of soirees.

But perhaps my most favorite collection ever came in the form of Tucker for Target, landing in stores across the country on Sept. 12.

The line is precisely what you'd expect to see out of Tucker in upscale boutiques nationwide. Billowy tops, lightweight dresses with bold, colorful patterns - the perfect compliment to any outfit (in my eyes, particularly suitable for the work place!) Yet the material doesn't feel quite as expensive and the price tag is much easier to swallow.

I hit Target 2 Sundays ago to be first in line to snag my piece of the Tucker pie. I first tried to take a bite when Gilt previewed the line, about 2 weeks before the Target launch. I missed my chance due to a Gilt iPhone app malfunction (grrrrr!), but my friend Meredith got lucky and bought the cutest butterfly print camisole dress. It was love at first sight when she came to visit me in Atlanta and sported the piece on our Sunday outings.

After trying on several Tucker for Target items - a gold tweed skirt, a long sleeve maroon and orange print dress, and a bell-sleeved, hooded jacket - I settled on the cutest prairie-flower print dress you ever did see.

Meredith and I sported our styles at a friend's wedding day luncheon this past weekend, neither of our dresses weighing in over $35. I styled mine with a neon pink J. Crew cardigan ($29.99 on sale) and some Hunter campus boots for a school-girl meets farm-girl aesthetic.

I'm hoping to get back in stores to get my hands on more Tucker for Target goodies before they sell out! Would love to hear if any of you have made Tucker for Target purchases!

When a store goes out of business, it's a somber thing. The local economy suffers and the boutique community mourns another fallen comrade. We've seen it again and again in the past two years, and it's never pretty.

Haute for Teacher

Ask my husband and I what our dream job is, and we'd both say, in unison, "a teacher."

Clark and I were very blessed to attend fabulous schools throughout our lives, but we are each particularly thankful for our high school experiences...me and my small class of 25 at Rocky Mount Academy in teeny Rocky Mount, NC and Clark at Woodberry Forest School a beautiful boarding school in the hills of Virginia, outside of Charlottesville. Though both of our experiences were incredibly different, we are both ever grateful for the time we spent on each campus, developing us into the people we are today. We make it a point to give back every year.

While we enjoyed our sports teams, our school dances and the "fun stuff" for those 4 years before college, we make it no secret that our teachers and mentors have almost everything to do with our happiness and our growth as people.

Celebrating this thought, an Atlanta area shopping center, Vinings Jubilee, wants to give back to the teachers that continue to give us all so much. Hey, I Got Some New Shoes On!

Two of my proudest finds lately have come in the form of shoes.

What is it about shoes that makes us girls go so bonkers? It's like men who don't give us enough attention, but we LOVE it and we want more.

Check out my fab finds: a pair of Via Spiga black leather and jute wedges (I've been on the hunt for some black-accented wedges all summer). Snagged 'em at Tootsies (when I got my Theory shorts) for $59.50, marked down from $175! Next up, probably my most fabulous find of the summer (maybe the century): these mega-badass snakeskin Modern Vintage wooden heels! These beauties came from the Boutique Bargain Warehouse Sale at Atlantic Station last month...ATL boutique Lexie and Jane is going out of business and had them marked down from $198 to $35!

These were fresh enough for the Paul McCartney show, for sure. Rocked 'em all night. Details, details, details!

The Long and SHORT of It

Ah, summer clothing. Ethereal floral prints, wispy tank tops, caramel brown sandals...these are a few of my favorite things.

But SHORTS? Not so much.

I probably own 3 good pairs of shorts, all three hand me downs from my sister. All 3 have been beat to hell by the both of us so that they don't constrict my legs and suffocate my poor ankles. I dread that first moment when you try on a pair of new shorts, and it's like you have two rubberbands latched on to your thighs!

But I have a Theory to my problem.

Literally.

Or should I say, Theory has become the solution to my problem after I discovered these shorts on sale at Tootsie's in Atlanta for $95.

Seem pricey to you even at $95 for a pair of shorts? Well, while mine came in an army green color for half the price of the khaki ones above, I have worn them well over a half a dozen times since buying them 2 weeks ago. The amount of usage I've gotten out of these shorts helps explain my theory of P.P.W.

What am I talking about?

Why, it's "Pay Per Wear" of course! You know you've gotten the most bang for your buck when you divide the number of times you've worn the item from the price it originally cost you. That's why in some instances, it's okay to splurge on that $350 DVF wrap dress- as long as plan on wearing it for the rest of your same dress size life.

So sure, I was only only $5 away from my maximum, but after sporting the heck out of those shorts in less than a month, I'd say it was a GREAT purchase.

SCHA-WING! I just scored 2 of the sweetest deals ever in the past 2 days.

Yesterday, I stopped by Desu Couture, a consignment shop in Virginia Highlands that I'd been wanting check out for quite some time. The woman working there was extremely helpful and enjoyed listening to one of my fave bands, Bonobo, so I immediately felt at home. After trying on a few awesome items, a killer Alice + Olivia LBD for $80 ($328 tag from Neimans still on it), a never worn pair of Joe's Jeans for $50, and an old school raw silk skirt from J. Crew, I found THE perfect pair of jeans.

Pants are never the easier thing for me to find. So my Momma always told me "when you find a pair of jeans that fit, GET THEM." And I did. For $27...seriously. $27. I love the hippy-ish nod with the embroidery...a throwback to my granola style that I've been neglecting on a daily basis now that I have to dress appropriately for work!

Today on HauteLook, one of my favorite new brands Urban Behavior/Costa Blanca, had a sale. When I worked at fab'rik, this was one of my favorite brands to "get away with murder" with as the prices are unbeatable normally and UNBELIEVABLE with the discount I had there. After passing on a pair of high waisted pants and a crisp white blazer, I came across the most bad-ass jacket on the planet for $28.

Loving these skirts by French Connection and Diane von Furstenberg for totally different reasons. On my pear shaped body type, the French Connection Story Skirt ($69.99, orig. $128) is a perfect fit for work. I'd pair this bright mini with a subdued grey silk tank or perhaps a flutter-sleeve, printed blouse with flats for the office (this skirt also comes in black, but I've GOT to stay away from more black skirts...I have three!)

Our DVF mini is well over 50% off at $90.04, originally priced at $225. Animal prints are always in style when done tastefully, and it doesn't get much more classy than DVF! Pair it with a ruffle collar blouse and simple cardigan for work; switch it up at night with a casual cook grey tank and chunky gold necklace and heels for drinks when you're off the clock.

Finally I have always loved peacock feathers and their colors, so I had to highlight this amazing feather bangle from Tory Burch, just $32. I would love to see this with several more gold bangles stacked up my arm!

Building upon my last post, this Banana Republic boyfriend jacket ($69.99, orig. $120) combined with this totally-Taylor Swift Free People floral skirt ($51, orig. $68) fit the bill as rugged (note the D-ring pocket on the jacket) combined rosy. Paired with a simple grey tank and these barely braided BCBG Generation Uba Sandals ($59.99, orig $89), you'll be a vision in very nicely priced pieces!

Game Time

Shopping is like a sport, and just as football, basketball, soccer and track & field stars have the "off-season", so do clothes. You see, even though the racks at Neimans and Nordstrom are preparing for pre-fall items, I can't even think about putting on a wooly sweater in this sweltering Atlanta heat...let alone BUYING the thing. I USUALLY buy clothing so that I can wear it PRONTO.

But I CAN wrap my head around a chic linen blazer that has probably been on the shelves since early March, marked way way down to something like $19.99. And even though I won't be needing said blazer until the chillier September nights to come, I can snag a steal and feel pretty damn good about it.

So many deals along these lines are popping their lil' price tags up online and in stores. As the waitress of what-to-wear for way less, I thought I'd serve a couple thangs up fer ya.

I'd love to see that Mirror/Dash French Nautical Blazer (sale $19.99, orig. $58) with preppy white, red or pale yellow shorts, anchored by chic flats (think Tory Burch) but tough jewels. As for the Splotch Washed Jacket from Forever21 (sale $14.99, orig. $29.80), this would be mega-sweet worn unbuttoned with some structured black shorts and a long grey tank with peep-toe ankle booties to amp up the bad-assness (think "Rihanna running errands" style). Our final steal comes from Free People with their Long Seamed Blazer (sale $89.95, orig. $128). I love how FP has it paired with a prairie-esque short skirt (would not wear anything too long...think proportions here). But I might roll up the sleeves a bit & even add another patterned top instead of the solid one featured as the jacket is such a strong base. Paired with some tough, loosely laced Doc Martens, you'd be channeling Empire Records like a pro.

Hangin' Tough

J. Crew's seasonal collections can be hit or miss for me. I remember absolutely loving their fall collection last year, enjoying all their twists on cardigans and scoring a couple from my Christmas wish list. But since that time, I have not been drawn to shop there as much. Maybe it's because I've found other wonderful places to shop since moving to Atlanta or maybe it's because I feel like so many of J. Crew's pieces are meant to fit on tall, stringy girls with boyish figures. And this is so far from my shape that I don't even try on skirts, pants or shorts from there anymore.

But one thing J. Crew (and Victoria's Secret) does do quite well is the art of the sale. And if you're trying to spend $100 or less, you should probably worship at the Church of Jenna Lyons.

Parisian Chic

What is it with me & bows lately? I am usually an extremely hipped out kind of lady with more tunics than tied-up cuteness. Maybe I feel like it makes me look fun/young yet professional? Or, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I may just totally be on a Sonia Rykiel-inspired kick. Anyhoo, I found this top at fab'rik Buckhead and fell in love instantly. For $38, it will look great with my white Hudsons my sister gave me or my cotton high waisted H&M skirt of meetings and events!

The Perfect Summer Blouse

So pumped about this $19.95 crisp white blouse I found at H&M. Very Sonia Rykiel meets Lela Rose, in my eyes, no? I originally bought it to wear with a pink, high-waisted linen Loeffler Randall skirt (can you tell I am a fan), but I wore it today with skinny black J Brands, woven pink snakeskin Beirn flats and half tucked in to give a peak of my patent leather, blush-colored J. Crew belt. I have a feeling this shirt is going to take me all the way through summer, and I'll do a little photojournalism of how it carries me.

Shape Up & Ship Out!

It's almost summer, and you know what that means. Magazines everywhere are giving us 5,921 reasons to "get in shape" for that perfect "bikini bod"! They'll give us a conditioning regimen, 4 or 5 moves for 10 or 12 reps, for that rock hard booty or flat as a board abs. And to this I say a big fat Clueless-inspired "WHAT.EVER."

When I'm talking shape up, I'm talking tribal accents, Aztec-inspired, geometric prints that are popping up left and right (like the cellulite dimples I'll likely sport on the shores...so be it!) I knew this trend was going to be huuuge when I saw the Marc by Marc Jacobs spring '10 collection.

These Boots Were Made for Savin'

I will never forget the first time I spotted a pair of Loeffler Randall boots. My sister-in-law's impeccably chic friend Elizabeth was sporting a wonderfully wedged camel colored pair with a super-cool vest to top off the outfit. At that moment, I was hooked like the fashion-crazed fish I am. It just takes a bit of swimming around to find the (almost) equivalent at a lower price!

Since moving to Atlanta, I have visited the consignment shop Labels Resale Boutique several times (thanks to another impossibly chic friend named Elizabeth, coincidentally!) to whet my whistle for, what I like to call, "the thrill of the chase." There is something so rewarding to me about digging through racks and piles and boxes of inventory to find that special something...a seriously under-priced Bottega Veneta bag, an Hermes belt, a pair of Missoni flats.

One faithful day a few weeks ago, I did not quite make my Loeffler Randall digs dreams come true, but I did come pretty darn close. Check out these G-series moto boots I snagged for $30. An ounce more leather and I might convince myself I can handle a Harley.

In the past several weeks, I've worn these puppies more times than I can count, thanks to some rather erratic weather we've been experiencing. The colder temps lasting long into spring were almost...dare I say...enjoyable because I got to sport these boots for a little while longer than expected. Sure, they'll sit in the back of the closet as we'll soon fry eggs on the sidewalk in Atlanta. But for now, I've got a pretty cocky grin on my face for finding such a bitchin' pair of boots!

Taking In "The View"

Ever since Bob Barker stopped hosting "The Price Is Right", my interest in daytime TV went south. Don't get me wrong, I love starting my day with Meredith, Matt, Al and Ann on the "Today" show, but once Hoda & Kathie Lee come on at 10AM...it's all over for me (but trust me, you'll want to click the link).

So imagine my surprise when I was bored as hell waiting for an oil change and saw Marisa Tomei sporting these gorgeous nude booties on "The View"!
Simply LOVING their skeletal yet feminine look, I shrieked with glee realizing that we have a pair at by Anna Michelle at fab'rik that give Miss Tomei a run for her money.
Not only do these shoes completely elongate your leg (as most skin-toned heels will!), but I'm telling you, they are the most comfortable shoes I own! (What? Like you really thought I hadn't bought them already?) And for $36, this is trend you can easily follow...guilt-free!

Becoming the Bag Lady

I've never been one of those girls to possess a ton of handbags. I tend to buy a bag & stick with it for the majority of the year (read: until the bottom of the damn thing becomes brownish, grayish with dirt. Just ask my Herve Chapelier bag, circa '05-'07...RIP "Chap"). But something has come over me, dear readers! I'm realizing you don't have to spend a ton of a cash for your carryall, so you can afford to switch it up if you dote on a tote. I've always been one for neutral colors so I can hold my little ones near and dear year-round.

Call me boring, but I'm seriously sweating these neutral knapsacks for a 12 month span of sportin'.

Trust me, a bright green bag for spring time is tons of fun, but if you want a friend forever, go with neutrals like those shown above. And here's a tip: don't be afraid to buy from a discount site like Gilt, HauteLook or RueLaLa...buying accessories is so much easier than opening up that UPS box and finding out those jeans don't fit (...because they're too big, of course)!

Lela Rose Is a Rose Is a Rose

There are many things I love in this world. And I know "love" is a strong word, but it doesn't even begin to describe how strongly I feel about my parents, sister, husband, in-laws and sweet pup (a black lab named Monroe...the most handsome dog in the universe).

In terms of fashion, I happen to love a Texas-born designer by the name of Lela Rose. To me, she epitomizes the definition of southern elegance. Her looks are prim and proper without being stuffy or matronly; she's conservative with a twist...a plunging back here, a mesh panel or thoughtful pleat there. So naturally, I chose Ms. Roses's handiwork for the most important day of my life thus far, my wedding day!

(The result? My all-time favorite dress I've ever worn, above!)

But I'd be foolish to think I could afford this look everyday (and if you can, may I suggest you check out my sister-in-law's store Vermillion in Raleigh, NC)! But lately I've seen some nods to the craft that is Lela Rose's. Her Spring 2010 Fashion show presented extremely wearable pieces in cheerful colors.
Inspired by the two beautiful looks above, I found the following pieces to help recreate the timelessness & easily mix-and-matchable style of the sweetest flower in fashion!
Leave it to Forever21 to nod to Lela's looks with whispy prints and bold hues. It seems as though this $27.80 blush linen blazer could be an essential piece to usher you into spring! (Chiffon Leveled Dress, $27.80, Watercolor Flower Dress, $24.80)

Any of these shoes would serve you well with the above pieces. Even Lela herself supports thrifty finds, with those $34.99 fuchsia pumps (middle, above) available at Payless. The most versatile find today are these $28 Twist Buckle Gladiator Sandals (left, above), tough enough for dancing on the lawn at your favorite concert but polished enough to wear to a bridesmaids luncheon. And finally, these $39 Blowfish Denim Flats (right, above) perhaps speak to Lela's trademark pleats so much so that I must give them their own close-up, Mr. Deville.

Cream of the Crop

Lucky for me, I am a child of the 80's (and lucky for me, the hair straightener was invented right around the time I reached high school in the 90's - SCORE). Also lucky for me, this means my survival depended on "Growing Pains," a young Jonathan Brandis to pine after & a frizzy-haired Sarah Jessica Parker to look up to. You see, before she was Carrie Bradshaw, she was Janey Glenn in the greatest move of all time "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (tied with "Adventures in Babysitting" of course).
In the movie, SJP's style starts off as "Catholic-school girl" and morphs into "DanceTV badass" as noted in the photo above (MAN, I wish you could see the white lace-up ankle boots she has on under those jumpin' legs...CLASSIC). The cropped tee not only highlighted her rockin' abs, but it also helped convince the audience that she was a rebel indeed! Inspiring? I think so! But first things first.
JUST SAY NO to anything too cropped. Home girl looks like she lost half of her top on the way to the photo shoot. Keep the length G rated, adding a loose tank underneath if you're feeling overexposed.

Get the looks above, and you're automatically lookin' casually cool. But don't let your top influence your bottom, if you know what I mean. Keep the hem lines longer down there by wearing some skinny jeans or a just-above-the-knee length pencil skirt.

*I was going to call this entry "I Be Strokin'" but a) I wasn't sure you'd get the Clarence Carter reference and b) I wasn't sure you'd find it appropriate...carry on!

I could sit here and lecture all of us on how I think fashion is art, Lady Gaga is a genius and Alexander McQueen's (R.I.P.) wedge platforms(?) are aesthetically, "like, aaaaaaamazing." But truth be told, I don't believe any of that (Gaga a groundbreaker? Helloooooo, does anyone remember Bjork?)...save the "fashion is art" part, there are some trends and icons that I find more on the "loco" than "lustful" side. But when clothing is inspired by art, not imitating it, that's when I find articles to be the most beautiful and swoon-worthy.

Take the watercolor trend for example...whistful prints of flowers and leaves become the canvas to creating the perfect outfit. I'll leave painted prints on my bottom half to Agness Deyn; otherwise, I might as well carry a boombox blaring Sir Mix-A-Lot's "I Like Big Butts" wherever I go...

Equestrian Chic: "Bits" and Pieces

Last week, Clark and I visited the High Museum in Atlanta to explore the Leonardo Da Vinci "Hand of Genuis" exhibit. Before our visit, I knew of da Vinci as the inventor, the astronomer, the musician, the writer and most prominently the artist...the creator of most famous works like The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But I was surprised to learn that da Vinci had a passion for sketching horses and longed to created life-sized (some larger than life!) brass monuments of these gorgeous animals.

In my eyes, there is no more beautiful a mammal than a horse (pups are a close second). I can't help but be in awe of their taut muscles, fluid movements and shiny coat. Don't worry - I'm not gonna go all "Daniel-Radcliffe-in-Equus" style on you. But I will incorporate style into this discussion and show you how to gallop your way towards to sleek look.

In my opinion, creating a good outfit is like beginning a long night of drinking - you've got to establish a good base (for the latter, I vote pizza). Confession: I want to wear mustard...BADLY. I see it smothered on Leighton Meester's flawless bod, and I dreamily utter a Liz Lemon-inspired "I want to go to there." But alas, when worn against my skin tone, mustard makes me look like my neck thew up. I just can't seem to pull it off! So I look to other jewel tones to help get the job done...and I use the old adage of "Never match the color of your eyeshadow with the color of your dress"...well, sorta...when pairing my jewels. Emerald green with deep amethyst? Sure! Blood red with bright turquoise? Certainly! Below is what I believe to be the right jewel tones for moi (et vous?)...all for less than 100 smackaroos!

If You Get a Wild "Hair"...

I don't have pierced ears. Well, not anymore at least.

I first got them pierced in the 1st grade (alert: WAY too young for a child to care for her ears). I mean, I could hardly even see over the bathroom counter for God's sake! So naturally, I neglected to take care of my lobes, and the holes that were once there sealed themselves up like a Ziploc bag. And then 3rd grade hit. I felt my coolness relied solely on getting my ears pierced once again, and here's where the story starts to sound like an LSD trip.

Every year at Christmas, a magical fairy visits my home on Dec. 23 and delivers pajamas for my family to wear on Christmas Eve. This has been a long-standing tradition at the Suggs home, one that I hope will continue when I have kids, when my kids have kids, etc. etc. Somehow the "Night Night Fairy" (as we call her) got word that I desperately wanted to get my ears pierced again. So that faithful Dec. 23 night in 1993, the Night Night Fairy not only left me pajamas but also permission to once again get my ears pierced!

Long story short: I don't have pierced ears. Lesson? Don't get pierced ears before age 15.

And what does this have to do with today's post? Well, the decorations I would place on my ears have now ended up on my scalp. No, I'm not hanging strings of baubles from my strands. I'm talking about hair wear! Click to enlarge...it's for your own good!

Hold Me Closer, Tiny Floral

I grew up on a street that was unpaved until I was about 8 years old, about 10 minutes from a grocery store or any major intersection (or at least one with a stop light). I envied my friends who lived in neighborhoods...how easily they could just walk or bike down the street to play with each other! But in my favor, I had the deep, dark woods and the field across the street all to myself, and there were days that I spent hours after rushing out of school at 3PM to tie dandelions into crowns and bracelets for myself. When I see tiny vintage floral prints, somehow I reminded of these seemingly endless afternoons under the eastern North Carolina sun, gaining my independence with every last dandelion tied around my skinny little wrist!

Cameos have always been super intriguing to me. Just who ARE these regal-looking people we are wearing on our necks and ears and fingers? My first cameo was given to me about 7 years ago, around the time I graduated from high school. It was passed down to me by my great-Grandpa George, and I just love the mix of masculinity (gold contrasted with tigers-eye) and femininity (the delicate bow on the side).
Furthermore, I love that this ring (like most cameos) represents a deep connection to and appreciation for family. And what could be more fashionable than that?

On the comical side, I'd love to wear a cameo on the red carpet one day. When Joan Rivers asks me "Who are you wearing?", I could say "Great Aunt Bessie!"

Believe it or not, I have an "outdoorsy" side equally as large (if not larger) than my "fashionista" side (and I'm not even sure I can call myself that, but for lack of a synonym, I'll stick to it). So when I roll out of bed looking like Molly Shannon's impersonation of Courtney Love and see those few drops of rain chilling on my windowpane, I say a little flem-coated "woo hoo!" and head for my closet to merge my two personalities. No, I don't always lace up my black Laura Croft-looking REI boots, and no, I don't always zip up my high tech Arc'teryx softshell and head for the Smokies to go hiking. But I do find my middle ground, where function meets form, and I embrace the usefulness of a good raincoat.

If we were playing a word association game a year ago and the word "sequins" came up, my immediate response might have been "DANCING WITH THE STARS"! But you don't have to be a has-been teen witch TV actress or someone who has made your fortune by releasing a sex tape to rock this trend anymore! The best part of this bling thing is that you can take it as little or as far as you want, staying true to yourself and your own sense of style (and that's rule #1 in my book)!Take this $78 Free People sequin mini dress...in no way would you ever find me walking down the streets of Midtown in this get-up. You've helped me sell jeans that no longer fit (dang it)...you've helped me avoid work by looking at the missed connections in every city I've lived in (admit it, you're guilty too)...and just when I thought your 1992-looking face couldn't get any sweeter, you brought me Laura Whitlow.

While searching for some well-priced, "shabby chic" furniture, I came across Laura's ad, which linked to her website "Rethunk Junk" (the name is just as adorable as she is). We struck up a friendship after we discovered we share interests in money-saving, Anthropologie knobs and sarcasm.

Locket to Me...

I believe there is something so special and sincere about a beautiful locket. Vintage lockets, by nature, must come with a story, and it is up to us to concoct such tales in our head should we not know the history of such a treasure. Lockets remind me of a slower time when all you had was your man's photo while he was away...no cell phone calls, no texting, no emailing. You could whisper your thoughts into the open clasp, shut your eyes tightly and just "know" he heard you.

The locket I wear frequently (seen above) came from my Grandma Ginny, for whom I am named. There is something so comforting and familiar to me when I hear that "click" of the locket, so soothing and serene.

The look on Etsy with the vintage skirt (see 2nd post) totally inspired my outfit for last night's outing at Cellar 56 in Buckhead. I paired a $39.99 Tulle Skirt with a last season $10 Old Navy Belt, a $42 Adam by Adam Lippes Tee (which I bought on sale for $26) , an old $25 cardigan with velvet trim from Delia's, tights from TJ Maxx and my fave Seychelles booties. Paired it with my Grandma Ginny's vintage locket, and I'm outski!

Va-Va-Velvet

Velvet is like that bitchy "sort of" best friend you had in 7th grade. Sometimes she is there for you: shopping at Golden East Mall with you, eating endless slices at Pizza Inn with you, cheering the high schoolers on at a Friday night basketball game with you. And then POOF! She disappears from your hip! And then she won't talk to you when you pass her in the hallway...and she tells all your friends you have B.O.

Luckily, I never had a friend like that, but I feel like velvet is one of those trends that is never here for long, so I do not suggest spending gobs on money on it (unless it is on the interior of a finely tailored coat)!

I found this skirt for $19 at a vintage store at 900 Peachtree St. NE in Midtown called My My My Boutique. It has a slight snakeskin print emblazoned in its softness...combining granny material with gritty fierceness (click the photo below for a better view). Grrr! I will wear it with sweet silk tops and drapey necklaces (which I am sure to buy about 109334 from this boutique before the clock strikes 2010). Featured here are Seychelles booties (which I bought for $94, true to my "100andSouth" philosophy!), a $50 necklace by Lucie (no longer in production) and a $10 vintage clutch.

To me, nothing screams "Winter is approaching!" like a nice plaid ensemble. I'm not talking head-to-toe plaid (synonymous with "denim on denim"). I'm talking a perky piece to one-up that black skirt you own and have been wearing to church every Sunday since you were a junior in college (no doubt that black skirt is 100% awesome, but variety is the spice of life, non?)
